JONATHAN C. HYMAN is a Sullivan County, NY based
documentary photographer, photojournalist, and independent scholar
whose work centers on public speech, memorialization, vernacular
art, and contemporary American popular culture. Since 2016 Hyman
has travelled widely covering the 2016, 2020, and 2024 presidential
elections and a wide assortment of rallies and events documenting
expressions in favor and against both Donald Trump and his opponents.
The photographers most recent long-term project, The Epoch
of Trump - inclusive of the three aforementioned elections - illustrates
Trumps dominant influence on American culture by documenting
the vernacular art and verbal expression at the intersection of
private and personal emotions and notable historic moments including
the Coronavirus Pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement, and
public gatherings from Womens Marches, rallies protesting
anti-semitisim, ICE, DOGE, and pro-immigration rallies, to Veterans
against Trump events, Charlie Kirk vigils, and anti-Gaza war vigils.
A lecturer and former U.S. State Department Cultural
envoy best known for his work surrounding the vernacular art,
memorials, and public speech made in response to the September
11th attacks, Hymans work is a cornerstone collection of
the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. In addition to
being the subject of a University of Texas Press book co-edited
by renowned scholars Edward T. Linenthal, Christiane Gruber and
Hyman titled, The Landscapes of 9/11: A Photographers Journey,
this body of work has been exhibited at national cultural institutions,
featured in Time Magazine, the New York Times, the Journal of
American History, Der Spiegel, El Mundo, and other media nationally
and internationally.
