JONATHAN C. HYMAN is a Sullivan County, NY based documentary photographer, photojournalist, and independent scholar whose work centers on public speech, memorialization, vernacular art, and contemporary American popular culture. Since 2016 Hyman has travelled widely covering the 2016, 2020, and 2024 presidential elections and a wide assortment of rallies and events documenting expressions in favor and against both Donald Trump and his opponents. The photographer’s most recent long-term project, The Epoch of Trump - inclusive of the three aforementioned elections - illustrates Trump’s dominant influence on American culture by documenting the vernacular art and verbal expression at the intersection of private and personal emotions and notable historic moments including the Coronavirus Pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement, and public gatherings from Women’s Marches, rallies protesting anti-semitisim, ICE, DOGE, and pro-immigration rallies, to Veterans against Trump events, Charlie Kirk vigils, and anti-Gaza war vigils.

A lecturer and former U.S. State Department Cultural envoy best known for his work surrounding the vernacular art, memorials, and public speech made in response to the September 11th attacks, Hyman’s work is a cornerstone collection of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. In addition to being the subject of a University of Texas Press book co-edited by renowned scholars Edward T. Linenthal, Christiane Gruber and Hyman titled, The Landscapes of 9/11: A Photographer’s Journey, this body of work has been exhibited at national cultural institutions, featured in Time Magazine, the New York Times, the Journal of American History, Der Spiegel, El Mundo, and other media nationally and internationally.
